About Lisa Abel-Palmieri, Ph.D.


An educational innovator passionate about shaping the future of learning. Collaborative leader successful at rallying a team, designing and launching new strategies and developing metrics to show growth. A poised public speaker and fundraiser that's not afraid to get into the trenches. An activist of equity and social justice. An avid design thinker and researcher that believes building empathy is the key to change management, shifting culture and developing new concepts.

Lisa Abel-Palmieri is a non-profit leader deeply involved in educational innovation and the empowerment of young leaders in Pittsburgh. As Head of School and Chief Learning Officer at Holy Family Academy, Lisa’s work includes running one of the largest high school internship programs in the region, focused on bridging the education-to-employment skills gap within STEM sectors for students traditionally underprepared, underrepresented and untapped.

Lisa is the co-founder and organizer of EdCampPGH and serves on the planning committees for numerous events around the region including the Three Rivers EdTech Conference (TRETC). She has presented on deeper learning and workforce development with youth nationally at conferences and schools. She volunteers her time as an Equity Fellow and is an active member of the Remake Learning Network, Pittsburgh STEM Ecosystem, Schools That Can Pittsburgh and the advisory teams of The Maker's Clubhouse and Carnegie Science Center. Passionate about engaging young women and minority students in STEM, she is the founder of Tinker Squads and a former robotics coach. A strong executor, the programming Lisa has developed, funded and worked to sustain has proven to increase key skills sought by employers, such as problem solving and persistence. A designer at heart, Lisa seeks and builds partnerships with people, other organizations and industry as a community catalyst.

Lisa was awarded Non-Profit CIO of the Year by the Pittsburgh Technology Council in 2013 for her work building innovative STEM programs in formal and out-of-school time settings. In 2014, she was an honorable mention for Leader of the Year from Technology & Learning Magazine, an Athena Young Professional Award Nominee and a National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Teacher of the Future. In 2015, the Huffington Post selected Lisa as the 18th most social K-12 technology leader. In 2016 she was named an ASCD Emerging Leader and Deeper Learning Equity Fellow by Big Picture Learning and the Internationals Network for Public Schools.
